RPNI Surgery in Dubai
Overview
The Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface (RPNI) is a procedure that helps reduce painful neuromas. RPNI surgery is less invasive than TMR but best suited to treat smaller nerves. Hence, it is typically recommended for neuromas in smaller parts, such as toes or fingertips.
When a nerve is severed or injured, it attempts to regenerate, resulting in nerve endings forming neuromas or causing severe limb pain. RPNI surgery is performed after limb amputation to prevent the formation of painful neuromas and decrease phantom limb pain. RPNI can also be performed after a TMR procedure to address residual or recurrent neuromas.
RPNI surgery can also be used to facilitate the use and control of certain prosthetics. It can be performed in the right candidates during amputation or in a delayed setting after amputation for this reason.
Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface (RPNI) Procedure:
The step-by-step procedure for the RPNI technique is as follows –
Step : 1
Identification of a nerve affected with neuroma.
Step : 2
Performing excision of the nerve ending to stop the pain.
Step : 3
Selection and removal of a piece of muscle for grafting from elsewhere in the body.
Step : 4
Pacing of the peripheral nerve ends in the middle part of the muscle graft parallel to the muscle fibres.
Step : 5
Wrapping the muscle graft around with the help of sutures.
Recovery and Expected Results
The RPNI technique is effective in treating neuroma pain. Patients undergoing RPNI are discharged from the hospital on the day of surgery itself. But patients with trans-humeral amputation or other complications may require a few days in hospital for observation.
