Amputation Surgery

Amputations may be required as an emergency, to preserve life following a trauma or performed as an planned procedure to treat a limb which poses a risk to an individual, for example due to cancer or infection, or  simply to improve function if it is impeding activities.

As with any surgery, an amputation carries a risk of complications. The effects of amputation can be varied, with no two cases of amputation being the same. However, some factors are common in most amputation cases.

Phantom Limb
Pain Management

The feeling that an amputated limb is still present is very common. It is known as a phantom sensation. Phantom Limb Pain (PLP) is characterised as pain that is felt in a part of the body area which has been amputated. According to reports, the occurrence of PLP is as high as in 60–80% of amputees.

Most cases of PLP occur immediately following an amputation procedure. However, some occur a few weeks or even months later.

TMR Surgery

TMR surgery, also known as Targeted Muscle Reinnervation surgery, is a surgical treatment that is gaining acceptance as a nerve pain management associated with amputation.

Post-amputation pain is common among amputees. For example, you might feel sensations in a part of the limb that remains after amputation, or you could experience phantom pain in the area of amputation.

TMR nerve surgery can help reduce post-amputation nerve pain by reconnecting amputated nerves to nearby nerves and muscle targets. If you think about nerves as electrical wiring, TMR surgery helps to complete the “circuit” by reconnecting the “live wires.”

After a week of TMR surgery that Damian had to undergo for a very large neuroma, Dr Demetrius asked him how he was, and he said this. "Incredible! I've got no phantom pain, no phantom sensations. My foot ends where my stump ends. It's just amazing, I'm glad I've had it done." He would need a few more weeks to get up on his leg. We managed to increase the soft tissue padding at the end of the bone as well so Damian could really go from strength to strength as he recovered.
